stuff old ladies say
As a favor to a friend from church, I took her elderly mom to the hospital for an appointment today.  Here’s a tiny sample of some of the things she said in the brief interlude between me helping her into my car and me leaving her in the waiting room. “You look like a movie star.” “Do you feel like a movie star?” “Don’t you have an infant?” ...

Content Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink
joshuanguyen: parislemon: Others “in the know” of what’s really going on don’t speak up because they also know that ultimately, it doesn’t matter. Stories fade. New ones rise. Everything is forgotten in an instant. Roll with it. If anything, speaking up simply often makes things worse because it validates the original story in a strange way. And then there are the people simply too busy...

Meat Puppets Flyer Archive, 1980-1993 →
Well, this is awesome.  I became a huge Meat Puppets fan in the mid-90s, thanks to that one boyfriend with that one mix tape.  My parents later confiscated Too High To Die, which was duly returned to me like five years ago.  It’s neat to see these old flyers, some from before I was even born. BRB, off to listen to “Why?” and feel fourteen again. brothersmeat: fully awesome!

Five Geek Social Fallacies →
Wow, this blew my mind.  By articulating exactly what is in my mind when I think of social patterns.  Though I would add that these behaviors are typical of most people I’ve come into contact with, geek or not.  Reblogging to every corner of my blogging world. fibercrack: Always worth rereading.

In Which I Fix My Girlfriend’s Grandparents’ WiFi... →
“The warrior closed his eyes, summoning the power of his ancestors, long departed but watchful still. And then with the echoing beep of his digital watch, he moved with deadly speed, wrapping his battle-hardened hands around the power cord at the back of the Router.”

CHPN: This is not Church Hill (an open letter to... →
Yes.  THIS.  I always glance at articles that mention “Church Hill,” see by the address that it’s clearly not Church Hill at all, and shrug.  But I probably don’t realize how many people aren’t as familiar with the area and assume that whatever they’re reading is correct.  Journalists, it’s worth the extra few minutes here.  Either just say “East...

Five Ways 2011 Made Us Hopeful About RVA's Future →
Thanks for the Tumblr shout-out, i.e.*!  Besides that one curmudgeonly part of me that wails “NEVER CHANGE, Richmond!” I’m very hopeful too. ie-rva: In June 2011 we launched the i.e.* movement to transform this city from a civil-war attraction into a nationally renowned hotbed of creative talent. At the i.e.* launch event, we exchanged ideas with innovators on the front...
